HOCl Kills Germs on Contact Lenses & Cases
In research conducted on contact lenses and cases, surfaces were intentionally contaminated with several different types of viruses, bacteria, and fungi. These included Staphylococcus aureus (SA), Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CNS), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA), Serratia marcescens (SM), Streptococcus pneumoniae (SP), Achromobacter xylosoxidans (AX), Candida albicans (CA), adenovirus type 19/64 (HAdv19/64) and HSV-1. Once these contaminants were given time to become established, these surfaces were sprayed with HOCl.
HOCl eliminated 100% of the germs on the contact lenses, the only exception being that it was only partially effective on SA and HSV-1. All germs, including SA and HSV-1, were killed on the cases. Based on this research, HOCl has the potential to be used as a disinfectant for contact lenses and cases. Ideas for this blog were gathered from here.
