What is the Green Chemical Sector?
The production of “green” products is a growing sub-sector of the chemical industry. The global revenues in the green chemicals sector stood at nearly $9.5 billion USD in 2019. It is forecast to grow at an annual rate of 6.6% over the next 10 years. The EPA outlines the underlying principles of green chemistry as follows: to prevent waste, design substances which are less toxic to humans or the environment, design chemicals which are fully effective but have little or no toxicity, design substances which break down into a harmless state after they are used, and design chemicals to minimize the harm incurred if they are intentionally or unintentionally released to the environment.
Research has validated HOCl as a non-toxic, non-irritating, and eco-friendly disinfectant and antiseptic for many different industries. Therefore, HOCl is considered a green chemical. Ideas for this blog were sourced from here and here.
